Taxonomic Etymology:
Named for its unique characteristics and its discoverer.
Urspelerpes — From Latin ursus, “bear,” and Greek pelerpes, a fanciful derivative of pleur-, herpet-, perhaps a play on “salamander” or “creeper.” The name Urspelerpes can be loosely interpreted as “bear salamander,” referencing its relatively large limbs and distinctive features compared to close relatives.
brucei — A patronym honoring Richard C. Bruce, a prominent American herpetologist recognized for his work on plethodontid salamanders, particularly in the southeastern United States.
