Province/State Distribution:
United States: Georgia South Carolina

Taxonomic Etymology:
Named for its unique characteristics and its discoverer.
Urspelerpes — From Latin ursus, “bear,” and Greek pelerpes, a fanciful derivative of pleur-, herpet-, perhaps a play on “salamander” or “creeper.” The name Urspelerpes can be loosely interpreted as “bear salamander,” referencing its relatively large limbs and distinctive features compared to close relatives.
brucei — A patronym honoring Richard C. Bruce, a prominent American herpetologist recognized for his work on plethodontid salamanders, particularly in the southeastern United States.

First instance(s) of published English names:
Patch-nosed Salamander (Urspelerpes brucei: Camp, C. D., W. E. Peterman, J. R. Milanovich, T. Lamb, J. C. Maerz, and D. B. Wake. 2009. A new genus and species of lungless salamander (family Plethodontidae) from the Appalachian highlands of the south-eastern United States. Journal of Zoology (279):86-94);
