Taxonomic Etymology:
Named for its genetic and geographic distinctiveness.
Rena — Possibly from Latin, with no clear etymology provided by Baird and Girard when the genus was established. It may be arbitrary or refer to a personal or local name.
segrega — From Latin segregare, “to separate” or “to isolate.” Refers to the species’ isolation (both genetically and geographically) from other members of the Rena humilis complex.
