Note to speakers: We will adhere to a strict schedule for talks. Please plan your talks for no more than 12 minutes with an additional 3 minutes for questions from the audience. The lecture room will have a projector and PC computer with Powerpoint capabilities. Speakers should load their talk onto the computer no later than the break session before their talk. Any questions about the equipment or meeting facilities should be emailed to Dan Johnson at gdj102356@hotmail.com



All scientific paper sessions for the KHS 36th Annual Meeting will be held in Smith Hall on the campus of MidAmerica Nazarene University (2030 East College Way, Olathe, Kansas 66062) on 7-8 November 2009. There are many motels in Olathe. Listed below are links to a map of the MidAmerica Nazarene University campus and a map of Olathe (so you won't get lost). KHS members are encouraged to patronize the Hampton Inn (12081 South Strang Line Road, Olathe, Kansas - next to I-35 and 119th Street, and across the street from the Pro Bass Shop; 913-393-1111 ), which offers a special reduced rate ($85.00 per night) for those attending the meeting; be sure to mention KHS if you want the special rate and be sure to register for lodging by the DEADLINE of 11 September 2009. Lodging arrangements will not be made by the KHS.

Register in Smith Hall with the KHS Treasurer on Saturday and Sunday: Students (9th Grade through 12th Grade) $5.00 per person; all others $10.00 per person. K through 8th Grade are admitted free.



KHS AUCTION. The annual KHS auction will be held on Saturday night (7 November) at the Hampton Inn (maps to the Hampton Inn from Mid America Nazarene University will be available at the KHS registration desk). All proceeds from the auction go to the KHS. BEER, SOFT DRINKS, AND SNACKS WILL BE FREE.

ZOO BOOK SALES. The well-known and highly esteemed book seller, Eric Thiss, will display his tremendous diversity of herpetological titles in Smith Hall. Buy your favorite books, new and old. Eric is a generous contributor to the KHS auction.

SPECIAL OFFER. KHS Snake Bags will be offered to meeting participants at the special price of $10.00 per bag. Carefully hand-crafted and double-stitched, these outstanding brilliant-orange field sacks stand out in the field; you won't lose your catch unless you lose your eyesight from drinking too much orange juice. Buy one. Buy a dozen. Be a bag person.

LIVE EXHIBIT. A live exhibit of native Kansas herpetofauna has been assembled and will be available in Smith Hall for viewing and photography.

Election of KHS Officers for 2010. The KHS Nominating Committee is composed of Joseph T. Collins (Kansas Biological Survey, Lawrence), David Oldham (Pittsburg State University), and Eva Horne (Kansas State University), and offers the following slate of candidates:

Presentation of the Alan H. Kamb Grant for Research on Kansas Snakes for 2009. The recipient receives a commemorative certificate and a check for $300.00.

Presentation of
The Suzanne L. & Joseph T. Collins Award for Excellence in Kansas Herpetology for 2009 by Dan Fogell (KHS Awards Committee Chairperson). The recipient of The Collins Award receives a commemorative certificate and a check for $1000.00.


7:00 pmish, the KHS Auction will be conducted at the Hampton Inn in Olathe by Joseph T. Collins, Daniel Fogell & Chad Whitney, ably assisted by KHS Secretary Mary Kate Baldwin, KHS Treasurer Eric Kessler, and KHS Historian Suzanne L. Collins, and featuring many breath-taking books and other items (of questionable value). The KHS takes cash, credit cards, and checks. Be sure and get a bidding number before the auction commences. Bid vigorously, and support the KHS.

Noon: Presentation of the George Toland Award for 2009 by S. Ross McNearney and KHS President Dan Johnson. This award will be given for the best paper presented at the meeting by a student on the ecology of North American amphibians, reptiles, and/or turtles. The KHS Awards Committee will select the winner. The recipient must be present at the end of the KHS meeting to receive the commemorative certificate and a check for $200.00, co-sponsored by the KHS and The Center for North American Herpetology.

Notes: The Suzanne L. & Joseph T. Collins Award for Excellence in Kansas Herpetology will be given at this KHS 36th Annual Meeting in TBA, Kansas, to the KHS member judged to have taken the best photograph of a native species of Kansas herpetofauna. The KHS Awards Committee, composed of Daniel D. Fogell, Travis W. Taggart & Walter E. Meshaka, Jr., will select the recipient from photographic prints on display in Room TBA, TBA University, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on Saturday, 7 November 2009, at the KHS meeting. During odd-numbered years (photography competition), only KHS members are eligible. During even-numbered years (scientific presentations or publications), candidates are strongly encouraged to join the KHS, because preference will be given to KHS members.

** after a title indicates it is a candidate for The Collins Award in 2010.

*** after a title indicates it is a candidate for The Toland Award, to be presented on Sunday (8 November 2009) at the close of the meeting. This year, The Toland Award will be $200.00 and a commemorative certificate.
