The 2013 Spring KHS Field Trip will be held at Schermerhorn Park just south of Galena in Cherokee County, Kansas. KHS members will gather as early as Friday evening (26 April 2013) at the location displaying a large KHS signs. Campsites and restrooms are available.
Schermerhorn Park is 1 mile south of Galena (KS 26), and 1 mile north, 7 miles east of Baxer Springs(US 69/400).
Maps and other field trip information will be available at the campsite each day at 9:00 am.
Motels nearest to the campsite are available in Galena, Baxter Springs, and Joplin, Missouri.
There are restaurants in Galena, Baxter Springs, and Joplin, Missouri.
KHS herpetofaunal counts will officially take place from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday, 27 April 2013, and on Sunday morning (28 April 2013) from 9:00 am to noon. Individuals wishing to participate should meet at the KHS sign at Schermerhorn Park on both dates at 9:00 am.
While most specimens observed and counted during the KHS field trip will be released, selected specimens also will be collected by individuals with current Kansas Scientific Collecting Permits and kept for deposition in research collections at accredited institutions, where they (and their tissues) will be available for research use by any museum or university investigators. Field trip participants wishing to assist in this research effort are encouraged to donate their specimens to those individuals qualified to receive them.
