Pauly, Gregory B., Oliver Piskurek & H. Bradley Shaffer (2007. Phylogeographic concordance in the southeastern United States: the Flatwoods Salamander, Ambystoma cingulatum, as a test case. Molecular Ecology 16: 415–429) using molecular evidence, recognized two species within this taxon, Ambystoma bishopi (Reticulated Flatwoods Salamander) and Ambystoma cingulatum (Frosted Flatwoods Salamander). Collins & Taggart (2009 Standard Common and Current Scientific Names for North American Amphibians, Turtles, Reptiles, and Crocodilians. Sixth Edition) submitted for consideration the proposal by Pauly et al. (2007 op. cit.) to divide Ambystoma cingulatum into two species to a salamander systematist group composed of Ronald Bonett, Carlos D. Camp, Paul Chippindale, Richard Highton, David M. Hillis, Allan Larson, Meredith Mahoney, David Sever, Stephen G. Tilley, Tom A. Titus, David B. Wake, and Addison Wynn and a majority of those responding agreed.
